Top 10 Most Overlooked Herbs

Every season I take an inventory of the herb plants I want to try cultivating. This usually involves a walk around the garden to see which plants managed to overwintered well, and also an inventory of indoor refugees from last year that managed to survive the change of venue over the winter months.

Again and again, some herbs seem worth the effort that don't get nearly enough praise or press .

Wanna see what I bought at the wholesale markets?

What a busy 3 days in Columbus!

On our journey to buying, we came across the Warm Glow Candle Outlet in Centerville, Indiana…I’ve seen it before but seeing this huge candle is always so cool. I’ve never seen it at night so I’m wondering if the flame lights up and flickers…anyone know?

Going through Illinois there is an area of the Wind Turbines – it’s like they are growing out there….and it’s for miles and miles in both directions. They run in and East/West corridor. I think it’s
a rather spooky look myself – rather sci-fi and with the bit
of rain it was even more so.

We arrived in Columbus there around 3 on Thursday in time to
go to the Columbus Market…Hmmmm….not so good, well the products were good – but we didn’t buy anything there.
Beautiful handmade products but the prices were high.
Well deserved prices though…just more than we
could justify for resale. And there were only about 14 vendors
there so we were in and out in 1/2 hours or so.

We had quite a bit of the afternoon and evening left so
we went to CWI and bought a few goodies.

Friday we got to the Heritage show early to stand in line to get in and it was a wonderful show of all American Hand Made products.
We bought a few items there and also saw a few girls we
had been hoping to meet from the blogs.

Dawn from
http://hollyhillsprimitives.blogspot.com/ and her husband found us while in line, I must say Dawn is soooo sweet.
We ran into them off and on during the time we were there.
We had hoped to meet up with them at North Shore Primitives
in the afternoon but that didn’t happen

We also met Vicki from the APP forum and Jan whom I met on the internet. It was a fun day all around.

Then we left to head to North Shore Primitives where we met LISA from http://primsfromabove.blogspot.com/
North Shore Primitives  Karen and Lisa 1
She had her mother Sandy with her and I give them so much credit for hanging around as long as they did till we got there. It was further away from where we were than we realized! Wish we would have had more time to spend with them….what wonderful people!!!
I’m so happy I had the chance to finally meet Lisa, Dawn, Jan and Vicki!

Saturday again up early to get downtown to the Offinger’s show
where we bought more things here than we thought we would
so it was a good shopping day.

Well, enough of the chatter…on to what we bought. Now mind you it’s
not put out on display and some of it isn’t even unpacked but I wanted
to get some pictures of what we bought before it got put away.
Some will be sold, some is ours.
YellowWare Eggs  Blue small bowl
From Ragon House I bought 2 sets of these Yellow Ware eggs
so I’ll have 12 to put out in this Robins Egg Blue bowl.

Birdhouse
This birdhouse is Doug’s….he wanted it for the garden

Oranges
I wanted more of these oranges but this is all they had…
I just love the aroma.

Gray Large Bowl  Large Bowl
Bowls
I got 3 of these large 18 inch bowls and 2 medium ones from Doug Musser…we have a few of his cabinets in our home and the workmanship is wonderful.

Candles
Some tapers….always need these

Bags
Not very interesting but poly packaging bags for my products

Bulbs and Fabric
And some much needed silicone bulbs (these flicker)

Candles and Notes
More battery candles and my favorite note pads that I use for
my mailing labels….they have the penny tabs and work perfect
on the mailing bags.

Pods
Also from Doug Musser they had these large bags of Pods and Pine Cones and some other kind of outdoorsy thing like a vine….They were displayed in a large bowl and caught my eye…so had to had them!
I’ll show a picture later after I decide where they are going.

Wool Fabric
Now this was my bargain buy. When I was buying the candles at The Hidden Den space I saw these Wool fabric scraps in a bin….she had $1.00 per each piece but when I checked out it was .50 cent a piece!
I purchase 14 pieces for very little and got my favorite colors. I took several photos and none of the colors show up like they really are….
I got a deep gold and 3 that are different greenish golds and some browns. I thought they’d make a gorgeous Penny Rug but this picture sure doesn’t show the colors.

We took a drive over to the ESC Trading Company’s warehouse
sale and thought we did quite well for what we spent.
Everything for this sale was $2.00 a foot!!!
They gave you a yard stick and away you went.
Fabric Snowman
Foil Santas  Foil Santas backs
Santa  Snowman
I had the small foil covered Santa’s during Christmas for my home show
and sold them all and they had some more plus different ones at the
sale so we ended up with one of each size.
All our little guys cost us $2 each!

Book Clips
I bought some of these book clips too…they aren’t like the first one
I bought but they actually hold the thicker book pages like a recipe
book a lot easier.

Flags
We bought 2 different size flags to make some things with. I actually got a bargain on the ones wrapped in plastic…they were $1.05 each but you could buy 12 of them all bundled up so you didn’t have to count them. Well I didn’t realize it until we got home and I checked my receipts…I was charged only $1.05 as a single flag!!! Guess that was my bargain for the day ya think?

Towels
Package of 6 ticking towels that I’m going to
make something with.

Well there you have it! Nothing too tremendous on its own but hopefully when I get some things made up with what I bought and get some of it displayed it might look like something. I’m wishing I had a place to put the bowls upside down stacking against each other.
Gotta find a place first.

Thanks for visiting me today – come back again.

MATCHMAKING........Planters

The planting season is nearing...well, here in the north. And now it a great time to assess your containers.
How do you determine if yours are a match to your home?

My business is to "know" but........ taste being subjective...........let's explore options

  • A sense of formality
  • The colorway would mirror the limestone trim
  • The body scallop is a near repetition of the limestone

                                                                    source
  • Informal container as the home is country French
  • The large empty spot on either side of the door could be nestled with this container
  • As this container ages it will take on the color ways of the house, stain would make that instant
  • An obelisk as shown in the smaller existing pot would be a nice touch

  • I am partial to the container on the right....it's simplicity does not upstage the house
  • The interjection of some curves to a very square profile
  • Would paint it white to match the trim or the teal/gray of the left option for a pop of color

                                                                 source
  • The existing containers work; they do not upstage the complexity of the house
  • These are another idea........the formality and strong colorway are complimentary

  • The height of those on the left counterbalance the low profile of the structure
  • The large  picture window would become a focal point with window boxes
  • Color? I love the color of that pale blue. What do you think if the shutters went to a dark bluish/charcoal?

  • Both home and planter are not too formal but has elements of formality
  • Love the spheres near the walkway, this color would highlight them
  • Personally would do some re-arranging and place the planters on plinths for height and set in front of the shutters where they meet. What a perfect stage for the plants.

                                                                                                                    source
  • Two options here, both could work and both are very different.
  • The fish scale pot replicates the shingles at the peak. I would place at the bottom of the stairs on a matching base and put a rust toned glaze over the pot to blend
  • The wire pot on a stand suggests the Victorian era. If kept planted profusely, I would place it on the ground centered on the front porch to the right

                                                                     source
  • Notice the prominent slate roof? The amazing colorways?
  • This choice picks up the lead color in the roof, and the cistern nature blends with the era and style

                                                                   source
  •
  • The angular nature of this contemporary home needs a softening effect
  • The wavy motion like form in the same colorway could be planted with exotic/architectural stop in your tracks plants
  • There is already the cedar fence which introduces an opposing color, this choice does not add to that confusion.....ps; i would stain the fence grey

  • There is a lot going on here architecturally. I would add a complimentary, to the window trim, planter and allow the plantings to "speak"

  • GORGEOUS!!    The Faux Bois oversized cement planter created by friend Richard Taylor
  • Mimics the same old world charm, would not upstage but enhance

  • Folk Victorian; in the day.........a middle American take on the more elaborate Victorian
  • The black pots are classic but not fussy. Black will bring down the height and blend with the shutters.

  • A blend of architectural styles does not replicate any one look. I would say the overall look is traditional in a relaxed manner.
  • My choice would be these wooden containers stained in the dark brown of the trim

  • Italiannate......what else but the same; black and large

                                                                        source
  • Formal...... meet formal
  • From about the same era, the white is perfect and I would place them on either side of the front door....between the door and window........the red brick is a perfect back drop

  • Two strong elements here are the tile roof and the curved arches.
  • Placed out into the garden this would both enhance and create a tie-in

  • Let's be different! A window box would be expected. A series of free formed pots mounted under the window would be charming......horizontally that is.

  • Prairie styled home............prairie styled pots. And, the color is perfect!

  • Lot's of action here.....would keep it simple, match the shutters and fill with bronzey foliage plants and primary colored flowers

  • Two options here;
  1. An eye popping contrast with the over sized copper pots
  2. Charming wooden planters either allowed to age to the mellow gray or painted white

  • This home is very asymmetrical. One planter near the bench in an aged patina would work

  • Choices choices!
  • Against the home and within the courtyard allows for many styles. Love the cylindrical lead planter as shown and the strapped and hinged planter in the center

  • Arts and craft meet arts and craft!

  • South Carolina courtyard full of frills..........meet your pot!
  • I would stain this concrete urn BLACK and place on a plinth in place of the low ringed bowl as shown

  • You guessed it.............A HOUSE OF TIRES.....needs.......tada!

Let's get inspired with beautiful containers in lovely settings

Not a true match on the window box and sometimes opposites attract. This box stands out but, is still tied in......in this case the front door

Do not be afraid to blend materials but know when to stop...........two colorways are great......three or more is pushing it
                                                                      source

This home's height can be imposing. By replicating colorways OUT into the garden "brings down" the structure. LOVE when pots come out onto the property versus always on either side of the door.

CRAZY for this palette; bluestone shades are enhanced with the zinc planters. You could not possibly rush to this door and ring the doorbell but stop, sigh and let everything sink in.

The 'Terra Cotta Pot" house. Look close, the entire front is layered with varying heights of all one type of pot. Love how this arrangement becomes "one with the house" by adding the trellis panels and making this composition blend..

Unsure of your planters?  Send me photo's, we will look together

"Wishin' you a pot o' gold, and all the joy your heart can hold............Irish blessing

Debra
