Where do I begin…

The last few weeks have been the busiest I’ve had in just ages.

So….what has been happening since I was here last.

We celebrated Aidan’s 4th birthday at their house on the 20th – we went and visited early in the day because I wanted to enjoy Aidan before I started the day and didn’t know how I would feel being I had the procedure the day before.

That little boy is such a delight – he gets so tickled out of everything.
He has this thing with my camera…will not leave it alone and takes tons of pictures when he gets it in his little hands….so we bought him his own digital camera – Fischer Price makes a child friendly digital camera.
We couldn’t have gotten a better gift – along with some clothes and a toy…he was a pretty happy little boy.

He’s showing grandpa the ultra-sound pictures of baby Miranda

And shortly we will be greeting baby Miranda into the family…if she doesn’t go into labor by Sunday night the Dr. is taking her on Monday and inducing labor…he doesn’t want to let her go any longer being she’s a high risk.

My brother and his wife came over on Sunday and we went to the Elkhorn flea market – it is held at the fairground and it’s huge!  We arrived at 7 when it opened and left at 1 – I honestly can’t believe I held up that long but like I said at the beginning – just loosing a bit of the pain gives me more energy – oh, that  and 2 Vicodin helped…

Here are a few goodies I found.
This tin of really old and vintage buttons is large (a 14 inch tin).
I saw tons of vendors selling jars of them from $5 to $20 – which to me is way out of line.  Then I saw this tin and saw that there were very few buttons I could use for my projects.  She had $5 on it and I said it was a good price but I could use but a few in there and she said take it for $3.  Oh yes…I did take it.  I came home and put them in a bucket with Pine-sol and soaked them overnight – the water was about the color of this blog background.  But they smell good now!

Love my drying rack – it has original blue paint on it and she was asking $18 – I got it for $16.

Now this bowl is large – it’s about 9 inches high and 15 inches wide. I really don’t think it’s old – probably a reproduction as she has $28 on it…I got it for $24.  but I loved the size and the Aqua blue ring instead of the other ones I’ve seen with Royal Blue

Remember the peaches I bought at the rummage sale a couple weeks ago for .10 each?
They look quite real sitting in the bowl don’t you think?

Loooove this hanging basket – I will put greens and a candle in it for Christmas

So what’s next…Oh yes…Monday we went to Madison for the Wholesale Cash and Carry show.
I bought a couple things to re-sell at the show as long as they are handmade

Bought two of these fabric bags  - I’ll add some Sweet Annie in the pocket

One vendor has put out a line of woven table squares and table cloths…they aren’t as nice as FHW’s but they are nice.
This one will be used on one of my display tables at the show.  It’s a nice 52 x52

And these adorable mini bowls…hand made by one hyper little gal.
I didn’t intend to buy 3 – let alone all with Red but she had them in the bag before I could say anything.
But at .25 cents each they were staying they were hard to pass up.
I use these small bowls for rings and earrings and my vitamins so it’s okay that I have them.

The 2 Mercury ornaments were a find at the flea market

I bought 2 of these wood over the door candle holders for the show to display my candles that I wrap with flax and jute.

And I can’t get by without some Black Crow Candles…I bought 2 with a Christmas scent for the show – candles never sold well for me so I’m just trying 2 for the first show.

I finally got some Sweet Annie in the wall box that I bought at the rummage sale a few weeks ago.

When it was time for my brother and sil to leave on Sunday Gene gave me something – he knew I’d love it and cherish it.
It’s my grandparent’s marriage certificate.
Dated June 21, 1911 – he gave it to me June 25, 2012…it’s 101 years and 4 days old!
It’s in sad condition so I want to get it framed (and hopefully they can clean it also)

Oh, one more thing…I started a new blog for KM Primitives – It’s in the process but it would be great if you would follow me and add me to your blog list on your sidebar so that when I get it up and running completely it will be more noticed.

I have categories and will add products as I make new designs. I’m having a devil of a time getting Paypal  set up and products on.

Blessings,

Karen

What You Need to Know About Getting Rid of Japanese Beetles

It's June, and my email account is overflowing with pleas from desperate gardeners. What's the big disaster? Japanese Beetles. From a purely visual point of view, the iridescent green carapaces of these insects are lovely -- but the little beetles themselves are evil, evil, evil. They can devastate your beautiful raspberries and lay waste to your rose bushes in less time than it takes to

A light anyone?

I will admit to having a very strange pet peeve or maybe a better term is obsession, and it involves exterior lighting and it's size. See, I told you it was a bit odd, but since I am unable to help myself with this obsession, let's chat about it here. Perhaps someone else has the same affliction,  or worse.......... this is contagious.

Far too many homes outdoor lighting is much too small;
People, take a good look at your lights, particularly at the front door. Are they just function or are they form and function? The first two images are appropriately sized and become an accessory (form and function).
This stunning entrance is purely function only. Aside from all the gorgeousness, look at the light, it's too small and appears to have been forgotten when the renovation took place. And wouldn't it look best in black?
Yes, this could be me...........

How about lanterns, on posts?

And yes, do examine your exterior in the evening,  making certain your lighting functions brilliantly. No LED for this gal, I have to have the warm glow, almost golden cast from incandescent bulbs.

My two favorite go to companies is Visual Comfort, the above two. And Bevolo the lower two. They get it, most of their lighting is already oversized.

Here is mine from Bevolo.

After a girls trip to Savannah, I came home HAVING TO HAVE gas lights. Mr. 5th obliged, they did need replacing. Even though our home was built in the 1850's he was still able to add a gas line to fuel the fixtures.
The resultant glow is much more diffused and I would not have it any other way
Looking good! They are at one with the home, the color and style are appropriate, the size, perfect!
And being gas, a double bonus winner!!!

Not so lucky here, it is far too small and screams traditional colonial. I feel a french undertone with this house. How about this lamp below?

Here are some more lights that are too small, seeing the picture?

Now let's examine those that are just right

Those that "work" are utilizing both form and function. They are a part of the whole.

Lastly, my friend Suzy Stout. To see more about her house, and to drool, go to my former post here. Over the weekend Suzy had a mind-boggling estate sale, she is leaving this stunning home to start another chapter in her life. Don't you think her choice in lighting was perfect? Cannot wait to see what Suzy does next.
 to all, a good night...........
Fondly,
Debra

The “Do Over” Table

If you have ever watched cooking shows on television, you know how the miracle happens—you know, how the cook just finishes mixing up a cake, and seconds later pulls out a perfectly baked cake from the oven (sometimes with the frosting already on it??).

I think furniture-refinishing blogs use some of the same magic.  I mean, I can show you a “before” table like this one (yes the legs were originally white, but a little dinged up):

home projects 029

And end up with a picture like this:

wedding 005

…with no description of the blood, sweat, tears, and bad decisions that went in to it!

Today I will attempt to alter that misconception.  Winking smile

I’m sure you’ve seen these pine tables everywhere.  I think they sell them at all the big box stores!  The top was originally in a natural wood finish, and what these tables have going for them is about 193 layers of polyurethane (they wear like iron).  I thought that I could just sand it down and be done with it.

home projects 030

Did I mention there are 193 layers of polyurethane?

Well, I thought I had it all off, and so I applied a layer of stain.  After letting it sit for a few minutes, I wiped off the excess—only to find it came completely off the table wherever I “missed a spot”…or twelve.

I sanded my now-slightly-gooey table again (which is kind of hard on sandpaper).  Stained again.  Wiped again.  Ahh, only 9 missed spots.

This was not going well.

Having worked on these tables before, I should have been smarter to begin with (obviously I wasn’t).  I finally did what I should have done to begin with—and that was to apply a healthy layer of stripper to remove the last vestiges of the original finish.

Sanded again.  Stained again.  Wiped again.

Ahhh….

wedding 006

So that’s my “do over” table.  No miracles, just a lot of work!

Wishing I had done it right the first time, and saved myself a whole lot of time and aspirin!

wedding 004

And wishing that all YOUR “do over” moments…are few!

From Frigidaire:

The Frigidaire Gallery™Dishwasher gets dishes fully cleaned the first time, so there are no dish do-overs. Nearly half of adults admit to re-washing and/or re-drying dishes after the dishwasher cycle has been completed. To prevent dishwasher do-overs, Frigidaire® is stepping in with its new Gallery® Dishwasher featuring the OrbitCleanTM Wash Arm, ensuring dishes are cleaned right the first time.

Updates!

I haven’t been around much this week, but I just wanted to let you know…

flea market 094

Of course, some of my children don’t think this sounds very appealing…maybe they’d prefer something along the lines of:

I love you like peanut butter and honey.

Hmm…I kind of like it!

I have a couple of fun updates to share…

First, the Red Hen Home Etsy shop is open!

I’ve had an empty storefront for ages now; it was about time I put something in it!  I anticipate that it will improve, but at least it’s out there.

Second, the reason I have been swamped is that WE ARE BUILDING A WORK SHOP!  Please excuse me for shouting.

When we decided NOT to move last February, we decided to spend a little time and money to make our home work better for us.  One of our major goals was to park in the garage again (radical thinking, I know), which necessitated a two-phase plan of attack.

Step 1:  Move the refrigerator and freezer out of the garage (more on that later—it’s done  ;-)).

Step 2:  Get all my STUFF out of the garage and into a work shop!

So if I am a little MIA over the next couple of weeks, you’ll understand why.  Wish me luck on this exciting new project!
